Dengue Fever warning Buenos Aires province, Argentina, South America

Dengue fever is a serious viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. As there is no vaccine to protect against dengue fever, travellers are advised to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and stay in lodgings where there are mosquito screens on windows and doors. If you feel unwell during your trip or in the first two weeks after your return, you are advised to seek immediate medical advice.

You must between dusk and dawns wear insect repellent and get yourself a net or ensure that open windows are screened.  Add to that, wearing repellent like you do sun screen during the day – I am dive bombed by the blighters when visiting Palermo parks, especially in shaded areas.
I want to elaborate on feeling ill and start by saying that if you take ill during your trip to Argentina and shortly after, even if you do not recall getting bitten by a mosquito seek immediate medical attention and avoid non-steroid-anti-inflammatory medications such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen and any other branded medications that you are not sure of for muscular skeletal conditions or simple headaches or period pains.

The symptoms:
    •    Fever
    •    Headache
    •    Muscle and joint pains
    •    Nausea / vomiting
    •    Rash
    •    Hemorrhagic manifestations

Dengue Fever Argentina

As usual the media have blown the problem of Dengue Fever in Argentina completely out of proportion, but it is still very important that visitors and expatriates take note of some very important preventative strategies whilst residing in the province of Buenos Aires and especially when travelling to the North of Argentina where Dengue is more prevalent.
As the climate cools in Buenos Aires province the numbers of mosquitoes will decline and the risk diminishes somewhat, but like most health concerns – PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.
Dengue Fever is spread by mosquitoes.  Very simply a mosquito biting an infected host, then dines on you or me, and infects their new host.
    •    Prevention is about stopping mosquitoes multiplying in numbers
Mosquitoes can only multiply where there is water and will lay their eggs on the walls of any receptacle (container) that will hold water.  The eggs hatch once submerged and the lifecycle from egg to blood sucker takes just eight days to complete.  So, remove anything outside your homes that might hold water and check your own perimeter for possible hazards after each rain.
    •    Identifying and Isolating those infected quickly
The health authorities are well prepared in the province of Buenos Aires and a rapid preventative campaign is taking shape to both educate and protect the public.  But the rapid detection of those infected and their isolation is a must.
    •    Avoiding mosquito bites – day and night.
Wear insect repellent at all times, particularly between dusk and dawn.
Sleep indoors and ensure that windows are closed and you use the air conditioning.
Spray your rooms after closing the windows or but plug in devices that provide constant fumigation.
    •    See a doctor if you get flu like symptoms and avoid non-steroid-ant-inflammatory medications – Take only Paracetamol.

Life Size Barbie House

Girls play Barbie in life-size doll's house in Buenos Aires : America World
Buenos Aires - A girl who wants to be a "Barbie" has to start practicing early in life and in Buenos Aires she can. The world now has its first store there. Little girls can immerse themselves in the dream world of the long-legged doll. Behind the store's inconspicuous facade lies a full 650 square metres of retail space where girls can discover all that goes on in the life of a proper doll.

They also can be transformed into a Barbie.

While more mature Argentine women prefer to have surgery to achieve a certain aesthetic, girls aspire to similar goals in this Barbie land in a less harmless way. From pink-coloured erasers, Barbie shampoo, television sets to Barbie golf sets, no little girl's dreams go unfulfilled. The marketing ploy, Barbie and I, even makes it possible for girls to return home looking just like their beloved little plastic doll.

Recycling for Books

AFP: Argentine cooperative makes books from cardboard
BUENOS AIRES (AFP) — It is a small miracle happening in the middle of a crisis: Argentine cooperative "Eloisa Cartonera" manages to publish exquisite, unique books from cardboard boxes picked up in the street.

And its example has now found followers in Europe.

"I passed by every day but did not dare enter because my boxes were not beautiful enough," says Miriam Merlo, 23, a "cartoneros" -- the people who try to scratch a living collecting paper or cardboard for recycling from municipal waste in Buenos Aires.

Her eyes light up when she remembers the day that changed her life.

An "Eloisa" team suggested that she decorate a book cover and since then she has not stopped working.

"Before, I never read. Now I have my favorite books," says Merlo --nicknamed "Bear" -- proudly, without stopping to design covers that workers bring to her.

"You are the happiest 'Bear' in the world!" shouts 35-year-old cooperative co-founder Washington Cucurto from the other side of the room.

Organ Music in Buenos Aires

Organ virtuoso coming to NPAC
Organ virtuoso coming to NPAC
Music in Van Wert
For those who have heard and experienced a Hector Olivera concert, you completely understand when I say it is sooo much more than an organ concert. On Sunday afternoon, April 19 the Van Wert Co. Foundation Saltzgaber Music Hall walls will shake with the powerful sounds of Hector Olivera and his two touring organs.

Quotes about Olivera and his performances have been:

Hector Olivera brought the house down with a stupendous performance. From the moment the organ console rose to the stage, the audience was spellbound."

-The American Organist

"Olivera swept the audience with absolute Olympic virtuosity, and that still doesn't say it.... Hector Olivera is in a class by himself."

-Atlanta Journal

The raves continue to come in on this gifted and talented performer. What also amazes and delights audiences is his equal passion, whether performing classical or popular music. This prodigy began playing organ at the age of three in his native Buenos Aires. By the age of 12, he entered the University of Buenos Aires and by 18 had performed more than 300 concerts throughout Latin America. Soon thereafter, New York's prestigious Julliard School of Music offered him a scholarship.

People have fallen in love with Hector's passion for his music. His concerts are exciting, inspirational, amazing, and entertaining to say the least. For our concert in Van Wert on April 19, he has followers coming from New York to hear him. He has sponsored cruises and had sold out crowds. I'm sure the cruise lines just love him too!

Hector will be performing on two different organs that he will bring with him to the NPAC. One organ will display some of the great organ works ever written for classical pipe organ. The other organ will produce everything from keyboard sounds to horns, drums, strings, guitars and other sounds you will wonder where they came from. I have had the pleasure of hearing Hector at least three other times and every time I find myself leaving the performance just shaking my head.

He has performed with some of the most renown symphonies of the world and in some of the most prestigious performance halls including: Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Crystal Cathedral, Spivey Hall and Dallas's Myerson Concert Hall, just to name a few.

I know I talk a lot about upcoming artists, but this one continues to amaze me each time I hear him. Please trust me on this one. If you like anything from Bach to Ellington and John Williams to Sousa you will be glad you came to this one.

Tickets are available at the NPAC box office (419-238-6722 NPAC) or on-line at: www.npacvw.org. There are about 200 seats remaining for this upcoming concert. Don't miss this one! FINE'
